Meet the 2017 Summer Interns
Alec Norem comes from Clarion, Iowa, where his parents raise grapes for Train Wreck Winery. He is on track to graduate from Iowa State University in December with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science degree – his major is advertising, his minor general business, with an emphasis in marketing and management. In Iowa State’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, Alec helped launch “Happy Strong Healthy” magazine and gained further magazine-writing experience in an internship with Big Green Umbrella Media in Johnston, Iowa. He enjoys inventing creative scenarios and likes the idea that in copywriting you can be the first in the long line of folks who make a campaign. Alec spends his free time going to concerts (Shania Twain and Imagine Dragons were peak experiences), seeing movies (frequent “Lord of the Rings” viewings), watching Netflix (a SpongeBob SquarePants fan) and getting to know Omaha’s dive bars. He and a friend once held the world record for longest hug (32 hours). He plans to get a corgi, the first dog of his own, this summer.
New Business Intern
Katie Breidenbach recently graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in media and journalism with an emphasis in strategic communication and a minor in psychology. Active on the Vermillion campus, Katie participated in her school’s National Student Advertising Competition (second in the district); she was president of Coyote Communication, the campus combination of AAF and PRSSA; she was an events coordinator for Dakota Days (homecoming week); and she took a course on Leadership in Ireland – in Belfast, Dublin and Galway. Last summer she interned for the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau, and she heard about SKAR’s internship from sorority sister Rachel Green. Growing up in Columbus, Nebraska, Katie discovered her calling in people skills (and a love of fashion) by working at the Buckle. In her free time Katie likes traveling (Ireland hooked her), trying new foods and drinks (Mexican dishes, margaritas), going to $5 Tuesday movies and spending time with her family’s pets: a chocolate lab (Duke), two Cavalier King Charles spaniels (Mitch and Prince), a Shih Tzu (Petunia) and a cat (Mittens).
Graphic Design Intern
Liz Scott recently graduated from the Creative Center in Omaha, where in three years she earned two degrees: a two-year associate of occupational studies degree in graphic design and a three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She said she started by studying fine arts and graphic design, then went on to add skills with computers, presentations and campaign strategizing as well as video editing, 3-D design and web coding – a well-rounded education in her favorite field. “I’ve always done art,” said Liz, who creates posters on a freelance basis and makes vector drawings (the size can be changed without pixelation) for fun. Born in Florida, Liz grew up moving around a lot in Nebraska and finally graduated from the University of Nebraska’s online high school. Attending the Creative Center was eye-opening and inspiring, she said – she finally found peers who were good artists! She also has worked as a receptionist for CHI and babysitter. In her free time Liz likes watching Netflix (“Once Upon a Time” is a favorite show) and being with Benny, her gray cat.
Account Services Intern
Morgan Thompson is a student in Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. Morgan is studying advertising with a minor in environmental studies and plans to graduate in May 2018. At Iowa State she is marketing director for KURE, the student-run campus radio station; she worked with the campus marketing team for Boat House, a clothing brand anchored in Lake Okoboji; she served as vice president of her sorority, Chi Omega; she is a member of Cardinal and Gold, the on-campus creative agency; and she works in customer service at the university’s Parks Library. Although this is her first internship, last summer she was a counselor for a group of 9-year-old boys at Camp Towanda in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. An Omaha native, Morgan graduated from Millard North High School, where she played volleyball and soccer. In her spare time Morgan enjoys photography, bicycling, hiking and other outdoor activities; she likes scary books but dislikes scary movies. She lives with her parents and has two labradoodles: Mani and Murphy.
